What is Kanyashree Prakalpa?

One of the West Bengal State Government’s most popular initiatives, Kanyashree was launched in October 2013 by the West Bengal Hon’ble Chief Minister. The State Government supports the education of the girl students financially through this programme. This award is open to students in classes VIII through graduate school. The major goal of this Kanyashree Prakalpa is to prevent child marriage and to encourage female students to pursue higher education.

Kanyashree Scholarship Beneficiaries Details

The following people will be selected in this scheme:-

  • Approximately 3.5 lakh girls for one time grant each year in West Bengal
  • For the one-time grant, girls who are completing 18 years on or after 1st April 2020
  • Girls regularly attend institutions for education or vocational/sports training
  • Approximately 18 lakh female students for an annual scholarship each year
  • Girl children within the age of 13 to 19 years from families with annual income up to Rs 1,20,000/-
  • Girls of Child Care Institutes registered under the J.J. Act within the age of 18-19 years

What are the categories of Kanyashree Prakalpa?

There are now three different Kanyashree Schemes accessible for female students. These programmes are divided into categories based on the applicant’s age and current course of study. The following lists these three categories of Kanyashree Schemes.

Eligibility Criteria for Kanyashree

Eligibility for Kanyashree K1 & K2 Scheme

  • The girl student must be unmarried.
  • She must be a permanent resident of West Bengal.
  • The age of the candidate must be in between 13 to 19 years.
  • Studying in any Institution recognised by WB Government.
  • Must have a bank account in her name

Eligibility for Kanyashree K3 Scheme

This scheme only for the girls’ students, who are pursuing a Postgraduate degree from any recognised University.

Type of Schemes

The following scholarships will be provided in this scheme:-

Scholarship SchemeDetails
Annual scholarship (K1 Level)Under this scheme, female students between the age of 13 and 17 years 11 months will be provided with a scholarship every year. This is a State Government initiative and a method to ensure that the girls remain unmarried and study in school until they reach the legal marriage age
One-Time Grant (K2 Level)Under this scheme, female students between the age of 18 and 19 will be provided with a one-time grant (financial funding).
Kanyashree Scholarship (K3 Level)Under this scholarship scheme, female students from both Arts and Science backgrounds can avail of financial help on a monthly basis.

Kanyashree Prakalpa Scholarship Amount

  • Kanyashree K1: Unmarried girls studying in class VIII or above or aged between 13 to 18 years are eligible for Kanyashree K1 Scheme and will get Rs. 1000 annually.
  • Kanyashree K2: Unmarried girls studying in High School and aged between 18 to 19 years are eligible for Kanyashree K2 and will get Rs. 25,000 as a one time grant.

The age of the applicant will be calculated on the basis of 31st March of the current year.

Eligibility Criteria

The applicant will have to follow the following eligibility criteria in this scholarship:-

The female student must not turn 18 as this would make her ineligible for yearly scholarship benefits, and she would only be able to get a one-time benefit 6. The female student must be enrolled between class 8 to 12th standard in Government recognized regular or equivalent school or equivalent vocational or any other technical training courses 7. The family income limit will be varied under the following situations: The student is already a recipient of the scholarship and will be applying for a renewal of the  benefit students parents (both father & mother) are the deceased student is physically handicapped
One Time Grant (K2 Level)The student applying for this scholarship must be a domicile of West Bengal She should be unmarried upon attaining the age of 18 Students’ family income should be less than or equal to Rs. 1,20,000 per year The applicant female student should be enrolled and regularly attending an Institution of Higher Education or Training The female applicant’s family income criteria can be varied only under the following cases: Student’s parents (both father & mother) are deceased student is physically handicapped
Kanyashree Scholarship (K3 Level)Only the students registered for the K2 scheme would be eligible for the K3 scheme There is no maximum age limit to apply The student must have passed an undergraduate degree with at least 45% marks They must have taken admission in any postgraduate course at any University

Documents Required for Kanyashree Prakalpa

For the Kanyashree K1 and K2 Scheme, eligible students must apply offline from their existing institution (school/college). The completed application form must be submitted with the following papers.

  1. Photocopy of Voter ID Card of parent / legal guardian.
  2. Photocopy of Birth Certificate issued by the appropriate authority.
  3. Declaration of the marital status of the applicant (to be made by the parent / legal guardian if the applicant is under 18 years of age, and by the applicant herself, if she is over age 18).
  4. Photocopy of a page of Bank Passbook which provides bank account holders details.
  5. Photocopy of Disability Certificate (if any).
  6. Coloured passport size photographs of the applicant.
  7. Family Income Certificate.
