A silvery brook continues to run across the lovely green valley. Greens that are abundant

fields of grass surrounded it on both sides. The sun shines down from the top of a mountain, illuminating the valley. A very young soldier is discovered in there dozing off, his mouth agape, and his head resting on a mound of ferns. The sun has warmed his grassy bed, yet he still appears frail. At his spread-out feet on the ground, several flowers are blooming. The soldier used to smile, and the poet believes the smile revealed the soldier’s kind, innocent nature. He desires that the young man spend his final night in tranquilly and comfort provided by nature. He realises the soldier was killed in battle when he sees two bullet wounds on one side of his torso.

Le Dormeur du Val, the poem’s French title, which translates to “the (male) sleeper of the valley,” was the original language in which it was written. The English title “Asleep In The Valley” slightly alters the meaning and leaves it unclear as to whether the individual dozing off is a guy or female. However, it is obvious from the poem’s content that the sleeper is a young soldier. He must have slept off for good since two bullets in his side kill him. The sleeper and the valley where he is dozing off are both mentioned in the title. A silvery brook runs across the valley, which is green. The field is covered in ferns, making for a comfortable bed for the sleeper. Around him, flowers are also in bloom. The sleeping person, however, is open-mouthed and unaware of their surroundings. But last, in a peaceful environment, he is enveloped in serenity. But it’s unfortunate that peace was only achieved through death. The peaceful and lovely valley stands in stark contrast to the violent setting of war. Thus, the title is not just descriptive but also very evocative.
